Fate of Healthcare Overhaul Bill Uncertain
02-03-2010
Although the Democrats lost their filibuster-proof supermajority with the election of Massachusetts Senator Scott Brown (R-MA), they are still hopeful that some version of the healthcare overhaul bill might pass. Discussions have included adjusting the existing bill proposal to be more conservative. Others have suggested trying to reconcile, a process that tries to circumvent the need for a supermajority.
Meanwhile, House Democrats have begun an effort that has centered around the insurance company exemption from certain antitrust laws. They are trying to isolate this issue from the remainder of the healthcare overhaul bill in the hopes of winning a victory for an issue that has been supported by many Americans. By eliminating the antitrust exemption, proponents argue that insurance costs will be driven down, offering more affordable options to citizens seeking insurance coverage. Republicans have not indicated support for this bill, as they are trying to encourage a clean slate for restarting the healthcare bill discussion.
